Hungarian organizations in Uruguay

The Hungarian Club of Uruguay was founded in 1936,[4] its building was built between 1941 and 1943, in Montevideo. The purchase of the property generated an extraordinary financial weight for the members of the community. For this reason, in February 1944, the leaders asked the founding members to, as a sign of their gratitude, offer founding membership to all those who through their sacrifices achieved imprescriptible merits in the reconstruction of the Club. The most recent renovation started in 2014, with significant financial support from the Hungarian government.

At the entrance we can see the commemorative plaque of the founders of the Hungarian Club of Uruguay. Also, another commemorative plaque attests to the greatest achievement of the Hungarian composer Ferenc József Debali (from Transylvania), who composed the national anthem of Uruguay. Upon entering the bar lounge and the Petőfi Room (19th-century Hungarian poet) we can find four paintings with the signature of Antal Páger (Hungarian painter). Antal Páger lived in Argentina from 1948, where he worked as a painter and a graphic artist, as well as was leader of the Hungarian Theater Association of Argentina between 1948 and 1954. The secretary office on the first floor preserves many other souvenirs and objects, including a photocopy of the Uruguayan anthem’s score signed by the author Debali. It was granted to the Hungarian Club by the composer's family. The medals of the Tündérkert (Fairy Garden) folk dance group are stored in the showcases, as well as the cups of bowling competitions that were won in different competitions by the bowling section of the Club that has been operating for almost eighty years.
